Reading is at the forefront of the average American student’s education. From elementary school up to college—we go from reading picture books about personified fruit to long-form essays about restoring cocoa plantations. But, somewhere along the way, it is not uncommon for students’ interest in reading to begin to wean more and more. Perhaps because it begins to feel strictly like a strenuous educational obligation, or because the immediately gratifying nature of technology makes reading feel like a task that requires too much concentration. Or maybe because the reward system is less conceivable than it was when we were children—one book read for one shiny sticker? Open Book aims to enlighten design students to the reward system they may not see on the surface.
